HULL COATINGS - BOTTOM BLACKING
[ BITUMEN BASED | COAL TAR PITCH | EPOXY TAR ]

Traditional bottom blacking materials are based on pitch or bitumen compounds. For new work/where bare steel is present or where pitch has been used previously, it is preferred that pitch based coatings are used as these have a number of advantages over bituminous systems. Pitch is resistant to diesel and oil, has higher protection against corrosion and is ideally suited for use with cathodic (anodes) protection. In instances where bitumen has been used in the past or there is uncertainty as to the type of coating, bituminous materials should be used.
To ascertain whether a coating is pitch or bitumen, clean a small area and wipe with a cloth dampened with white spirit. Should the coating be easily removed or leave a heavy dark brown stain, it is likely the coating is bitumen based. If resistant it is likely the coating is pitch based.
It is essential to ensure that with all materials adequate thicknesses of the coating is applied and that it is completely dry before the vessel is returned to the water

Bitumen Based Hull Coatings
Sealex (heavy Bodied Bitumen Solution) Intex (Filled Bodied Bitumen Solution) Black Prince
Designed to give maximum protection with a 2 coat treatment. Ideal for re-coating where previous bitumen treatments have suffered major degradation or where new coating is required on bare steel. A spray grade is available for both conventional and airless spray systems. An easily brushed product for re-coating existing bituminous materials and is also suitable for water tank treatment. When used as a complete protection on bare steel, a minimum of 3 coats must be applied
intex
A low viscosity bituminous paint suitable as a refresher coat over existing bituminous coatings. Black Prince should not be used as a primary hull protection. Recommended 1 to 2 coats

Coal Tar Pitch Hull Coatings
Hull Coating Standard Black (Pitch Based) Comastic (Pitch Vinyl)
A resilient pitched based coating with a gloss finish. Ideal for economic re-coats where one or two coats are sufficient. When used for complete protection on bare steel, at least 3 coats are recommended. Similar to Coal tar pitch with superior abrasion resistance and flexibility. Good resistance to microbial growth. An attractive matt black finish. Two to three coats are recommended.
Coverage Rate: 10 sq.m per litre
Drying time: 2-3 hrs in good drying conditions. Re-coat time 24hrs (Heavy application will result in extended drying times).
Colour: Black
Coverage Rate: 4 sq.m per litre
Drying time: 1 hour in good drying conditions. Hard dry 4 hours
Colour: Matt Black

Epoxy Tar Hull Coating -Two Pack System
Epimastic GP (General Purpose) Epimastic MT (Moisture Tolerant)
Designed for application under dry conditions and when adequate time is allowed before returning the vessel to the water. Two coats are recommended. Developed specifically for application in wet conditions and/or where the craft is to be returned to the water shortly after coating. When applied in wet conditions or to a wet surface, brush or roller application should only be used. Do not spray. Two coats are recommended.
Coverage Rate: 3.7 sq.m per litre
Drying time: Hard dry 8-16 hours
Colour: Black, semi-gloss
Coverage Rate: 3.7 sq.m per litre
Drying time: Hard dry 12-24 hours
Colour: Black, semi-gloss
The Epimastic range consists of tough, high build coatings with excellent abrasion and corrosion protection. They must only be applied to shot blasted or abraded bare steel or clean/abraded existing epoxy tar.
NB: Drying time will be extended at temperatures below 10 Deg. C. Both grades can be diluted with up to 10% X95 Thinner to improve application.
